Despite Therese Maxi’s 34 points, the Heat made it through the second half

Still without Joel Embiid, 76 players, who were battered in Game One, are already forced to win this second round so they don’t find themselves up against the wall, 2-0 before returning, with their shoulders pressed, to Philadelphia.

In the first half, we witnessed a match dominated by the Heat team in general, and it was effective in attack (20/40) led by Tyler Hero, who celebrates in front of his fans with his cup. Sixth man of the year Style (16 points and 5 rebounds). Team 76 has his heart and gives his all, but he sorely lacks attacking inspiration in the half field in the absence of Joel Embiid.

Doc Rivers’ men fell for a while to -14, thanks to James Harden, as they were very active during this first period (16 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists). Far from giving in, but far from worrying about the Heat, the 76ers somehow score below the ten-point mark at the break (60-52), and anything is still possible in the second half in this Game 2.

After halftime, it only takes a few minutes to realize that the 76ers’ awakening is just perfect. Because the Visitors have the same problem as in the first half: their attack is struggling for the chain, while the Heat keeps a steady pace. After 36 minutes, Philadelphia is still falling (91-80), despite the third quarter at 13 points from Therese Maxi.

The last act happens without any rebound, especially as the 76ers sign their worst quarter in the game (6/18 on shots). Unprecedented in the last quarter of this year, but not too serious, Therese Maxi and his teammates played a slow game, but they never knew how to hurry up to alarm the Heat.

Philly lost again to Miami (119-103), as the Heat were undefeated in this playoff. Led 2-0, the 76ers returned to Pennsylvania without certainty, but hoping that Joel Embiid would return for Game Three because without the “process” of opposing the Heat’s minimal resistance, a sweep is looming.

What to remember

There is no Duncan Robinson yet. He was suspended from the bench in the first game, and went into the winger for a few seconds, in the last moments of this second game. It is now clear that, for the rest of the series, Eric Spoelstra has chosen to “sacrifice” Duncan Robinson’s external portrayal in favor of the more reliable defensive image of Victor Oladipo, a former Hoosier who was better able to hold duels against James Harden and Therese Maxi on a large scale.

76ers forced to play ‘little ball’. In Joel Embiid’s absence, it was DeAndre Jordan who started between the first two games of the series. In Game 1, the former Clippers pivot was conservative, with 4 points and 2 rebounds in 17 minutes (and +/- from -22). In this second match, he did better, with 6 points and 5 rebounds in 13 minutes. But in general, he did not turn up anything, because he is useless in attack, and limited in defense due to his inability to “switch”. So Doc Rivers cut short the experience and turned to young Paul Reed for the rest of the encounter. Smaller and less imposing in front of the circuit, the DePaul College-trained strong winger though is more mobile than his teammate, and brings more stability to the 76ers’ defense.

tops/swings

Tyler Hero. Very good match for brand new Sixth man of the year from the league. In the continuation of his 1 successful game, he accumulated 18 points (6/10), including 16 first-half points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists, while he is still on the bench.

Therese Maxi. The 76ers young full-back was perfect, and he was the only ingredient that really held up the Heat’s defense. He finished Game 2 with 34 points (12/22, 9/11 in free throws), 3 rebounds and 2 steals, with an impeccable stance on both sides of the court, and his usual racquet aggression.

Jimmy Butler. After the failed 2021 edition, the Miami winger continues to catch the title during the 2022 qualifiers. Very good in the first round against the Hawks, and continues against 76. Present everywhere during this game 2, collecting 22 points, 6 rebounds and 12 assists in 37 minutes, second best +/- for his team (+22).

⛔️ Danny Green. A very difficult evening for the veteran winger who was so painful to see during this encounter. In 23 minutes, he scored only 3 points, 1/10 on shots, including 1/9 from behind the arc. Helpful during the 2019 and 2020 playoffs, when he won the title twice in a row with the Raptors and then the Lakers, the former Tar Heel was just a shadow of himself. He picks up a perfect defense, restless at 3 points, and he’s currently unable to bring anything to the 76ers. He’s still hoping for a rebound soon, for his confidence and for Philadelphia’s survival in the series.
