Alienware X15 R1 Laptop Review, Summary

So it’s the first laptop test of the year we’re publishing here with the Alienware X15 R1. again, with AlienwareWe are using a relatively advanced computer. In fact, there is a healer in the bowels of the beast Intel Core i7-11800H (8 cores and 16 threads at 2.3GHz and 4.6GHz with thermal speed boost), powerful graphics card NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 with 8GB GDDR6 Memory And 32 GB of DDR4 memory It was recorded at 3200MHz.

For storage, Dell installed an SSD Micron 2300 from 512 GB. Displayed on screen 15.6 inch QHD (2560 x 1440 pixels) resolution and refresh rate 240 Hz. The operating system supplied with the device is Windows 11. The Alienware X15 R1 measures 359.7 mm wide, 277.25 mm deep, 15.9 mm high and weighs 2.36 kg.

Alienware X15 R1

At first glance, the properties have something to dream about. But how will this computer perform the many tests that we are going to undergo? it’s with 28 benchmark programs and 14 games We’ll be testing this high-end laptop. We will also test the quality of the board and perform a calibration via our own probe (the ICC profile can be downloaded in the “Probe Screen Test” section shortly after the test). We will also increase its consumption during games and on certain programs. We will also look at the CPU and GPU temperatures, but also the level of noise pollution. Finally, we’ll also open it up to see how Dell integrates components to get the most out of them. So you will know everything about this computer!

Let’s start by determining the price of this laptop Alienware X15 R1. It is offered at 3,347.98 € on Dell. The price may seem relatively high, but it can be justified in view of the many components and services offered by the brand. However, throughout this test we will check if the manufacturer’s asking price for this computer is set correctly against the competition, given performance.

Without further ado, let’s start by figuring out the packaging before dealing with the computer itself.

L ‘Alienware X15 R1 It comes in a relatively standard box. It is black in color without indicating the brand of the product. The only thing that defines what’s inside is a label on one side that identifies the sender, which is a DELL. So inside is a box containing the computer and under a compartment is the power supply. At first glance, we were surprised by this choice and weren’t really thrilled. Once the chest is opened, the magic happens.

Inside, a white box with a black cartridge in the center with the brand logo on it, the head of the famous Alien. We can really talk about a case since the opening system is like a jewelry box. In fact, to open it you have to scatter two parts of the chest to finally discover the precious. But before talking about the computer, let’s describe what its condition looks like. The set is white in color and uses the packaging we know from the brand. In the watermark we find a detailed diagram representing the bowels of the computer. On one side, we find the name ALIENWARE written in silver letters on a black background. The packaging is really stylish and fun to look at and even touch.

Now let’s open the box. Therefore, it is sufficient to separate the two halves to discover the computer. It is placed in the center of the box. There is not much to say about this part. However, under the computer is a black pocket in which there is a quick start guide and warranty information.

Appearance: Alienware X15 R1

Let us now discover this precious laptop. Alienware is available in: White (Lunar Light). However, the interior of the computer is black in color. On the cap there is the brand logo which is nothing more than an alien head. It is backlit and controlled by Alienware Command Center software. At the bottom right of the case there is always an inscription “15” to remind which series this laptop belongs to.

Now that we’ve figured out our alien dress, let’s move on to his guts. When the lid is opened, we find the usual design of the brand. There is no change of scenery and somewhere, it’s fun. The keyboard has 86 Matte black accents. The keys are a good size and perfectly located. Typing is especially easy on this keyboard. However, we can regret the lack of a numeric keypad. But that’s not necessarily a negative point, especially since we’re PC gamers. In fact, the numeric keypad will take up a lot of space and encroach on the keyboard. The power button is nothing but a strange head located on the top right of the keyboard. Above the keyboard is a honeycomb-shaped ventilation grille. Here the fresh outside air enters the intestines of the beast to cool it. The touchpad is below the keyboard. The texture is very nice and soft to the touch. We may regret that there are no physical keys to mimic the classic right and left click of a mouse. However, the entire keyboard part is very fun to use. Not cute, it’s backlit and lights up when touched. Throughout the testing and writing of it, we did not experience any difficulty or anxiety.

Now let’s go to the screen. As for the design, nothing too special. We’ll spend more time on the board’s properties on the dedicated test page. However, we can say that this screen is surrounded by a frame of black color. At the bottom, there is the brand name in silver letters. At the top of the frame is the webcam.

We can now inspect the left, right, and back edges of this Alienware. The left side looks like this:

  • 1 power outlet
  • ventilation grille

The back consists of the following:

  • HDMI 2.1
  • One USB-C Gen 2 port with power supply (5V/3A)
  • microSD port
  • Thunderlbolt 4 Type-C / USB 3.2 Gen 2 powered port (5V/3A)
  • USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 with PowerShare
  • 2 ventilation holes

On the right side of the computer, we find:

  • socket
  • ventilation grille

Now let’s move to the bottom of this computer. There are two plastic pads to prevent the computer from sliding and moving during use. This also makes it possible to circulate fresh air that will be sucked in from below, that is, the suction that is made through bee-shaped slots located in the place where the computer is at the highest altitude.

Now let’s tackle the guts of the Alienware X15 R1. But before you dissect it, you need to prepare the area and make sure that you have all the necessary tools nearby. In fact, disassembling a laptop is not a trivial process at all. We can only suggest that you contact a professional if you do not feel able to do so. On the contrary, if you want to carry out the process, planning the place, time, tools and above all a space where no child, cat or any other living creature can come and make a mess of the devices.

trick : To make sure that the pins are returned to their original place, we make a simplified diagram of the underside of the computer on a piece of paper. Then each screw is put on the sheet in the corresponding location and we secure everything with a small piece of masking tape.

To remove the bottom cover, all you need is a precision screwdriver with a Phillips head. There are a total of eight screws to loosen. Once the screws are loosened, just lift the cover. A fairly simple operation, but it must be carried out gently in order to ensure that the hood is not deformed.

As always with Alienware, the finishes are impeccable. In the center we find the blue board. The brand logo sits on it proudly. Above the alien head is the location of the processor as well as the graphics processor. To cool off all these beautiful people, there are four fans out there. We found the two slots for SSDs, one occupied by a Micron SSD which we will test a little later in the test. Next to it is the Killer 1675x network card. Finally, there is a battery that occupies almost the entire width of the laptop. There is only enough space left for the speakers. Once again, the integration of the components is really perfect. Nothing protrudes, and there is no risk of wires getting damaged when opening the computer. This unfortunately is not necessarily the case with all brands. Of course, installing an additional SSD is child’s play. Simply snap it into place and lock it with the included screw. However, we do not have direct access to the RAM.

We have a 87Wh lithium-ion battery and to keep the beast running, a 240W power supply. The charger is relatively modest in size. Which is very practical, as it allows you to move it quite easily.
