Philips unveils its first OLED screen

3

MMD Display has unveiled the first Oled monitor under the Philips brand. Featuring a 27″ Ultra HD Oled panel, the Philips Momentum 27E1N8900 is aimed at beautiful photo enthusiasts and editing professionals.

The first Oled monitor from MMD Display – the manufacturer of AOC monitors – and Philips, the Philips Momentum 27E1N8900 features a 27-inch Oled panel displaying Ultra HD 3840 x 2160 pixels, unlimited native contrast (an Oled classic), ultra-wide viewing angles of 178 Degree and course response time of less than 1ms, which is actually 0.1ms. Brightness is quite disappointing, with the manufacturer reporting 250 cd/m² with a reported peak of 540 cd/m². That’s a long way from the 800 cd/m² that the latest Oled TVs display, but this peak should allow HDR content to be displayed correctly with sufficient dynamics. Most interesting for creators, the manufacturer announced 99.7% coverage of the DCI-P3 color space, 99.6% of Adobe RGB and of course the overall coverage of sRGB, which is much less restrictive. Finally, with a Delta E of less than 1, the colors promise to be perfect.

If an Oled monitor has a much shorter response time than any LCD monitor, this model has a 60Hz refresh rate. So gamers will not necessarily be interested in this model that cannot compete with 120, 144, and of course 240 Hz monitors in terms of display fluidity, especially since it is not compatible with FreeSync or G-Sync technologies that prevent image tearing.

In terms of connectivity, the Philips Momentum 27E1N8900 has two HDMI 2.0 inputs, a DisplayPort 1.4 input, a USB-C port providing 90W of power, a headphone output and a hub with four USB 3.2 ports. The USB-C port is particularly interesting for connecting a laptop, as it ensures video streaming and data transfer from USB 3.2 ports and recharging the computer up to 90W.

Philips Momentum 27E1N8900 will be marketed in the USA and China at a price of 7,000 yuan, or approximately 990 euros, but it has not yet been announced in Europe. The price seems particularly decent for the Oled display, given that these models have been quite expensive so far: €2,600 for the LG UltraFine OLED Pro 32EP950 and €4,000 for the Asus ProArt PQ22UC. According to preliminary information, the Oled Philips display will use a panel from Japan OLED, like the two models mentioned above, but its more expensive price suggests that the panel could come from Samsung Display, which already powers tablets (Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra) and laptops in the The market (Asus Zenbook 14 Oled, HP Specter X360 14 or Galaxy Book2 Pro 15) plus modern QD-Oled monitors such as the Samsung Odyssey G8QNB 34” or Dell Alienware AW3423DW sold for about 1,300 euros. In any case, we hope that this monitor will be commercialized in Europe and that we can quickly put our probe on it.
