MSI GE76 Raider review: Monster gaming laptop in the RTX 3080 Ti and Core i9

building

MSI has kept the design the same as in 2021, so we find here the solid, studded chassis on the brand’s Dragon cover. RGB is also always in the spotlight with a strip of LEDs on the front of the chassis, adding a bit of color to its environment, but it won’t just make fans.

If the touchpad is compact and frankly anecdotal — the PC is clearly aimed at gamers who will necessarily use their favorite mouse or console — there’s a lot to say about the keyboard. Very responsive, adorned with a coarse texture for good finger grip, and displays some interesting shortcuts on the function key level (modify the performance profile, clip the webcam, or change the RGB profile, for example). It’s obviously customizable at will with the RGB backlight switch on the switch. SteelSeries GG software allows you to make all color variations of the LED strip and keyboard, assigning lighting effects to them if necessary.

As is often the case on models the games, the connection is very complete and the GE76 Raider can act as a side model: on the edges we detect three USB-A ports, a USB-C port, an SD card reader and a socket jack; On the back of the computer are the charger jack, an Ethernet port, a Mini DisplayPort, a USB-C Thunderbolt 4 port, and an HDMI port. Bluetooth 5.2 and wifi 6E are included for fast connectivity and Full HD webcam movies at 30 frames per second. It’s not Windows Hello compatible, but the display is frankly satisfactory in bright light. In low light conditions, the display is more distorted, but the image remains usable.

Once you remove 13 of the Phillips screws, you can access the RAM and M.2 SSD modules, all of which can be replaced. Convenient to change its configuration and replace a component that is no longer working.

Despite the thickness of the chassis and its two fans, this computer heats up. The thermal envelope for the processor and graphics card is frankly high and that makes sense. If the computer is set to silent mode it blows softly at 38.5 decibels in the game, then the performance mode increases it to 50.8 decibels, which gives the impression of a real hair dryer on the desk. In office automation under CineBench, it’s not much better as we noticed 48.3 dB. In terms of in-game heat, the PC has a lot to offer with peaks at 65°C at the air outlets, and a keyboard at 41°C towards the center. However, in heavy processing under CineBench it is much better with only 34°C registering in the center.

In the game, the computer overheats and ventilates a lot.

performance

The MSI GE76 Raider is equipped with one of the best processors at the moment: the Core i9-12900HK from Intel. Recorded at 2.9GHz, it features a 45W TDP which can go up to 200W over long periods (56 seconds). Its frequency in turbo mode increases to 5 GHz, but the HK suffix tells us that the CPU is jailbreakable. In our test model, it comes with two 1TB SSDs and 32GB of DDR5 RAM, but we note that the commercial model comes with 64GB of RAM.

With a CPU index of 168, the MSI GE76 Raider turned out to be one of the best performing PCs in the comparison. It far surpasses AMD’s Ryzen 7 5800H and even the latest Ryzen 9 6900HS. The Core i9-12900H of the Asus Strix Scar 17, which we tested, is still slightly better with a score of 176. It was already able to maintain overclocking frequencies regularly at 4GHz in video encoding under HandBrake, while our Core i9 settled at 3.8GHz Hz on average.

SSDs are also very fast, posting speeds of 6.8 GB/s sequential read and 5 GB/s write.

Mobility / Autonomy

With its 17.3-inch screen and massive chassis (39.7 x 28.4 x 2.6 cm), the MSI GE76 Raider can be called a laptop, but it’s not really portable. It also does not fit into a classic backpack, and its 2.9 kg weight will not fit things. It would also be necessary to add the 1 kg charger, bringing the total to approximately 4 kg!

The power source is huge.

The power source is huge.

While testing a Netflix video in Chrome, with headphones plugged in and volume set to 50%, the computer lasted for 4 hours and 11 minutes. It’s not much and other competitors do a better job, but it’s still within the norm for a PC the games. In any case, it will be necessary to remain connected to the sector to play in good conditions. Battery operation will greatly affect performance.

How does grading work?

The MSI GE76 Raider is definitely one of the best PC the games from the moment. Thanks to the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti and Intel Core i9, it is able to run any game at its maximum capacity, while the required programs perform their tasks smoothly and very quickly. Its build quality and 360Hz screen aren’t perfect, but they’re very well made, and it’s only the small details that pollute it. If this device misses the highest step, it is mainly due to its limited autonomy – although players will still be connected to the sector anyway.
