The Mavericks outshine the Suns: +33!!!

After six high-quality first matches, the Suns and the Mavericks meet in Phoenix for the seventh and final round. Game 7 concludes the series, epic so far. While the Warriors wait to find their opponent, the “Win Or Go Home” mode for both teams is in Arizona.

During the fully lunar first half, the Suns simply delivered the worst basketball of the season. Like Chris Paul – Devin Booker’s duo tense and off target (3 points, 0/11 in cumulative shots…), Monty Williams’ men tangle their brushes, find no solution and only score…27 points in the first half! All in 10/41 shots and 7 shots lost (for 8 assists). The best regular season team cannot be recognized in the first half of Game 7.

On the contrary, the Mavericks are on the ninth cloud. Under the huge momentum of Luka Doncic (27 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists), who dismantles the opponent’s defense with a smile, the Mavs have adapted the footprint position. The Slovenian is well supported by the bench. Especially Spencer Dinwiddy who scored 21 points in just 15 minutes.

In the intermission, at the end of a first surreal period during which Phoenix was humiliated in front of his audience, Dallas sailed too far in the lead and offered a really fatal gap to the locals: +30 (57-27)!!

In the second half, there is clearly no miracle. On the contrary, things got worse for the Suns, who collected 35 points in the third quarter. The gap reached +42 after 36 minutes (92-50) and spectators began to leave the hall at the start of a last, unimportant show, during which Monty Williams’ players narrowed the gap, for honor. The final score however is final (123-90) and the Mavericks, at the end of this match 7 by one, advance to the title finalist’s floor.

After back-to-back eliminations in the first round, in 2020 and 2021, Luka Doncic and Dallas surpassed a major collective achievement and joined the last square of the 2021/22 season. When to Meet Now: Warriors, in the Final Conference.

What to remember

The terrible meltdown of Chris Paul and Devin Booker. The two Sun leaders missed their game at the big shows. Choked up with a good defense of the Mavericks? Overwhelmed by pressure and challenge? Simply on a (very) bad evening? Hot, it’s hard to give explanations, because its crack makes us speechless. In his first career, Game 7, Booker finished 11 points and 3/14 in shots. As for Paul (10 points, 4/8 in shots), this is the fifth time in his career that he has lost a streak, when his team was leading 2-0. Which is a (sad) record in the NBA…

External shooter, Mavericks weapon of mass destruction. Jason Kidd’s men scored an astonishing 19/39 from behind the arc, breaking up the defensive styles of the Suns and Monty Williams. When the Mavs are so adept at three-pointers, they have almost no league in attacking. In the conference final, against well-armed warriors in this exercise, you must raise sparks…

tops/swings

Luka Doncic. The Slovenian spent “only” 30 minutes on the ground, but was not idle: 35 points (at 12/19 in shots), including 27 in the first half alone, with 10 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 interceptions! On a cloud throughout the first period, he almost folded the meeting into the first half. In this intense series, which was particularly marked by his altercations with Devin Booker, he finally had the final say in style. For the Mavs prodigy, this match is truly a “classic” from his playoff career. The kind of performance we will remember for a long time…

Spencer Dinwiddy. Perfect game for Texas coming off the bench, scoring 30 points, 11/15 on shots (including 5/7 on 3 points). Like Luka Doncic, he did most of his damage in the first half, including a severe heat stroke in the second quarter. Note that Doncic is the first teammates since Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal, in 2002, to plant more than 30 points in Game 7.

⛔️ the suns. Despite the stadium advantage, Monty Williams’ men sank in and saw their massive season end in the most brutal way. Surprised from the start by the mavericks’ aggressiveness and skill, they failed to respond and quickly lost track. Like their leaders, in distress in attack, Phoenix did not succeed: 33/87 on shots, including 12/34 on 3 points. The Arizona team, which reached the NBA Final in 2021, reached the second round in 2022, after a less convincing playoff campaign than it did a year ago.
