Advanced defragmentation options
This software has unique functions that you may not find in similar software.
Under normal circumstances, some Windows files are locked. You cannot move these files because they are in continuous use. This poses a problem when you want to defragment these files, which is why Smart Defrag has an option to defragment locked files.
The principle is as follows: you can configure the program to defragment locked files when you are not using Windows. The only time Windows doesn’t use locked files is during a restart, so Smart Defrag should run this type of defragmentation while your PC restarts.
You can activate this option in the Boot Time Defrag tab. This is where you will find your boot time defragmentation options.
Smart Defrag Tab Boot Time Defrag
Choose Enable defragmentation at boot time, then select one of the hard drives you have connected. Boot time defragmentation can be configured for the next reboot only, for the first boot on every day, for each reboot, or for the first boot on a specific day (every 7 days, 10 days, etc.).
You can also control what is defragmented. You can choose from page files, hibernate files, MFT, and system files. There is a File Selection section in Settings which allows you to defragment specific files of your choice.
Disk Cleanup is an area of program settings that you might miss if you didn’t look for it. It allows you to specify which parts of Windows are scanned for unnecessary files. You can tell Smart Defrag to delete these files so that you don’t defragment them, which can make the defragmentation process take longer than necessary.

When you run the manual defragmentation tool, you can clean these unnecessary areas. Some of the areas included in the scan include the Recycle Bin, Internet Explorer temporary files, the clipboard, outdated prefetch data, memory scraps, and chkdsk file fragments. There’s even an additional setting to enable secure deletion of files with DoD 5220.22-M, which is one of the most popular data sanitization methods.
To run Disk Cleanup with Smart Defrag, use the dropdown menu under the specific drive that needs cleaning, and select Disk Cleanup. Now when you run the defragmentation tool, the hard drives you selected for cleaning will go through this process before the defragmentation process starts.
Final Thoughts on Smart Defrag
Smart Defrag is one of the best free defragmentation software. You can install it and forget about it completely. It can be set to run continuously in the background and automatically adjust its actions based on what you’re doing.
We really like that you can perform a system cleanup while scanning the disk to remove unwanted files that you no longer need. Smart Defrag cleans up more spaces than any other defragmentation software we’ve used. However, it does not do this automatically. If the program manages to automatically clean the files before each defragmentation, then there is no good reason to complain.
At the top of the program, under Drives, there is an option to add a file or folder to the list. You can include common files and folders that you want to defragment regularly. Likewise, when you right-click on a file or folder in Windows, you can choose to defragment it using this program. We really love this feature. It’s a simple way to keep track of things you always knew were hashed and have direct access to defragment them.
We are glad to have an exclusion menu in Settings. If you have data that contains fragments, you can add them to this list to exclude them from analysis and defragmentation. Also, in the settings, you can choose to ignore files that are larger than a certain limit, which is great if you have many large files, including which usually lengthens defragmentation time.
Not all defragmentation programs support startup checks, and the fact that this program is only adds to its appeal.
