They live this final in the stands, but with the same force as their players and coaches. Presidents Elfic Friborg and Nyon Basket Féminin engage in a duel from a distance. With a lot of passion. And of course a lot of hope. As the saying goes, “The final is not played, it is won.” Karine Allemann and Brigitte Perez-Gaille are ready to rock again on Sunday, from 4pm, at Saint-Léonard Hall where the Swiss Champion’s Cup will be awarded to one of the two captains. And that last meeting had already started on Wednesday evening, then Vaudoise victory at Le Rocher Everyone in the two squads has their own scenario before this final chapter.

How do you live this final?

Brigitte Perez-Gil (Neon): Really gladly. It’s only happiness even if there is a lot of tension during these matches. But I am very happy with our performance and the promotion of women’s basketball. Looking forward to this last meeting this afternoon in Friborg.

Karen Allmann (Freiburg): I saw this final like players. Because this duel is absolutely breathtaking, sometimes stifling with matches that are too close and too intense.

Do you think there will be a fifth match?

Karen Allman (Elvick): I don’t make a lot of expectations. But honestly, we knew before starting this workout that Neon has been very strong this season. Even if we were told we had no competition in Switzerland, we always said that this team would be very competitive. We saw it right away as we lost once at Le Rocher when other matches had already been contested. Nevertheless, we did well in the semi-finals of the Swiss Cup in their hall. All of a sudden, we told ourselves we had a small advantage over Team Neonna and we were hoping to win the title quickly. We knew it would be tough to push into the ropes, but not to that point, until the end of the last round.

Brigitte Perez (neon): Fifth game? At first, I didn’t think, no. I was just hoping we could at least win one, rather than one win at Neon. But on the other hand, I was absolutely confident in the first match in Freiburg. The team felt really good. I must admit that our training has grown stronger. Girls have gained a lot of maturity and self-confidence to reach this fifth game where anything is possible. We saw in our last encounters that we were very close. Now, we’ll believe in it until the end and hopefully that happens.

What kind of supporter are you?

Brigitte Perez Gael: I’m not too excited, well…it depends on who I’m with. Above all, I want to cheer for the team. But I still express myself, as if I’m still a player, especially when there are things on the ground that bother me. Let’s say I try not to focus too much on our club and stay objective, even if it often gets complicated. I must admit that with this level on the field it becomes necessary to have three referees, especially during the final.

Karen Allman: I think I have a job duty that requires me to control myself. So I may look completely calm but I’m angry on the inside. Sometimes I jump out of my seat and raise my fist, especially when there’s a totally crazy point and the Elfic is back in front. I live the match intensely, but I seem to be very calm…

What will be the key to this fifth match?

Karen Allman: We were talking about it on Saturday at St. Leonard’s, nobody really knows. I honestly believe that everything starts from scratch. There was no longer a favourite, no intruder, no trace of fatigue. So yeah, you have to have strong nerves and I know our players can have it because we’ve had these kinds of games that we had to win. Specifically in the European Cup to qualify or this semi-final of the Swiss Cup in Nyon. Now, a match like this, with people and a title at the end, this team definitely hasn’t experienced. Especially since we have a very present opponent pushing us to our last fortifications with a very difficult match. I don’t know at what level this last action will be played but I think it’s going to be pretty crazy, yeah, like the first four encounters.

Brigitte Perez Gael: I think this is the fifth game you will win or lose in the head. This is the key. Girls have to believe in themselves and stay that way until the end no matter what happens on the court. I especially think that the start of the match can be decisive. We can’t start like we did in game three when we conceded 32 points in the first quarter. Even if we know we can come back because Neon is a team that will believe in him until the end. Our girls will really give everything to the end. But if we start well, it will help us to be better in the head …

The biggest winner is women’s basketball?

Brigitte Perez Gael: exactly! For us, for both teams, this is an incredible achievement. We showed that in our sport, there was a great deal of spectacle in men and quality; that people love. Whether on the street, in the room or on the phone, I received a lot of messages of support, including those from the municipality. There is also more exposure in the media. We are very fortunate in our area. We saw people standing by to encourage the girls who did their best on defense, with an engaging and fast game, non-stop in the thunder. One of the keys to this final is training as well, and I’m calm there because we have high-level coaches who work together and give so much to the team. I’m convinced they prepared the team well to reach the top on Sunday at 4pm. For Neon, the season has been more than successful, but with all these efforts it would be good to get this title, even if it is still early in our goals. We didn’t expect to be so fast at this level…

Neon will count on another big match from American, Jessica Loera, for that title, while Elvik Friborg is hoping Nancy will immediately do everything to stop her.

Karen Allman: Yes, all those people who are so excited about this final report and all these reports on TV, it’s absolutely amazing. Because I gotta tell you honestly, it annoys me with all those people who say women’s basketball isn’t horrible. Sure there should be more than two teams competing in Switzerland, but there are some great players who put in a great show. And yes, it is top notch and very positive for our sport.
