How many public holidays are there in France each year?

Public holidays are a commemoration of a civil or religious day or an important event whose list is defined by labor law. In France, there are 11 public holidays per year, compared to 10 in Belgium, 12 in Spain, and 9 in Germany. In Europe, Cypriots have the highest number of public holidays with 15 days per year. On the contrary, in the United Kingdom, there are only 8. These dates are set according to the history and culture of the country. So there are two types of public holidays, civil and religious. There are 5 civil holidays: New Year, a public holiday since the First Empire in 1810 May 1st (Labor Day) declared a holiday in 1919, May 8 commemorating Germany’s surrender, July 14 celebrating the storming of the Bastille which was unemployed Work since July 6, 1880 and November 11, World War I Armistice Day. And 6 religious holidays: Assumption, Assumption, All Saints, Christmas, Pentecost and Easter are the six religious holidays in France. The first four holidays became public holidays from 1802 after the signing of the agreement between Bonaparte and the papacy. Easter Monday and Pentecost were added in 1886. Note: There are some local peculiarities: in Alsace-Moselle, Good Friday and December 26 are also public holidays and in the overseas provinces, slavery is abolished.

Are public holidays paid?

May 1st, Labor Day, in France is the only day businesses must take a day off and pay it (but there may be professions that allow exceptions). For other public holidays, the law states that when day n is not working in a company, the employee must be paid from 3 months of seniority. If the work is done on a public holiday, then the employer is not obliged to pay a higher wage to his employee, on the other hand some collective agreements provide for an increase. It is therefore advisable to consult your collective agreement to find out your situation. As for bridges, the employer is not obligated to grant them. If the collective agreement does not specify this feature, the employer remains free to make the decision. In any case, he was not forced to pay his employee’s salaries that day. On the other hand, the employer can impose a bridge on the employees.

Is a public holiday a holiday?

A public holiday is not necessarily a day off (not working). An employer has the right to require his employee to work on an official holiday, except for May 1, Labor Day. In fact, May 1st is the only compulsory public holiday for all employees of all companies in France. So it does not necessarily work and pay unlike other public holidays. But if May 1 falls on a regular day of rest in the company (such as this Sunday, May 1, 2022), then it will not be paid and will not lead to the right to additional rest.
