Benoit Raphael, founder and general manager of French startup Flint, is one of those. On “one way” to South Asia in his pocket, this Frenchman took the briefcase and his computer and flew all night. “We were already working full time with my partner,” he tells us by phone from Bangkok, where he stopped for a month. He schedules his appointments according to French time zones. “Initially, I still have meetings at 6pm (1pm in France). I missed sunset while I was in Bali, it’s weather,” says Benoit Raphael. Since then, he plans a maximum of four meetings in the afternoon and leaves for the weekend on a desert island. “It’s a rhythm you have to find,” he explains.

This way of working has gained momentum with the Covid-19 pandemic. Between 2019 and 2020, the number of digital nomads increased by 49% in the United States, according to a report by MBO Partners. Then the work enticed the rest of the world. It now affects between 20 and 35 million people. This number is expected to increase in the coming years.

“I spend less time working but I am more efficient”

But if the idea of ​​working at a vacation spot makes you dreamy, the concept raises questions. While the line between private life and professional life has disappeared in many homes with the popularization of telework, the concept of well-being at work has become a troubling topic. In most work situations, the feedback is positive regarding mental health, productivity, or creativity.

Benoit asserts Raphael that this departure allowed him to undo his methods of work. “I put the idea of ​​productivity into perspective,” he says. “I spend less time working, but I’m more efficient, and I avoid unnecessary interruptions and meetings.”

Since Bali, the stress level of the businessman has decreased significantly. His fund is not yet profitable and the financial stress associated with his lifestyle has also decreased since his inauguration on the island. “Life is cheaper and my labor costs less,” he annoys the interested party before emphasizing that this departure was “good for the [s]Psychological health”.
