Will Thomas Hertel be present at the Euros?

In recent weeks, two French players signed with a Russian club, Livio Jean Charles at CSKA Moscow and Louis Lapere at UNICS Kazan. Leader Thomas Hurtl found an agreement at the end of June to join Zenit Saint Petersburg. The latter began preparations for EuroBasket 2022 with the Blues. To compete in the international competition, Agathois will not have to join the Saint Petersburg club.

FFBB press release:

The players and staff of the French teams will no longer be able to choose if they sign a contract with a Russian or Belarusian club, as long as the conflict continues.

In addition to sanctions and measures aimed at limiting partnerships and other financial support from entities with ties to the Russian state and Belarus, international sports federations, including the International Basketball Federation, decided to exclude Russian national teams, clubs and athletes from international competitions. The French Basketball Federation (FFBB) supports all of these measures.

At the meeting of July 28, 2022, the Federal Bureau decided that it was no longer possible to choose players and employees who sign a contract with a Russian or Belarusian club as long as the procedures for exclusion from all international competitions are in place. This decision also applies to players and employees who have already signed with a Russian or Belarusian club.

To this end, all delegates selected in the French national men’s and women’s national team are invited to sign a statement under oath to participate in international meetings and competitions. Players and staff will have to sign this certificate, indicating that they are not involved and will not deal with a Russian or Belarusian club for the duration of the conflict with Ukraine.

It is indicated that if this obligation is not respected, the player or team member will no longer respect the selection criteria for the following international deadlines, including the 2024 Olympic Games.
