Chronicle – The Mind in Basketball: The Basics

Per month, basketball europe A new column brings you a real master class on one of the most important, but often neglected aspects: the mind. Last month, we detailed the free-throw method. Today, put the primary importance of mental performance in young basketball players.

The best players in the world never get tired of repeating the basics. Tim Duncan, Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Steph Curry, Luka Doncic… all made the essentials their brand. They had, or had, in their game, complete control of their props, dribbling, and shooting and continued to master the most basic of basics to reach a level of excellence where many of them were enough to implement these basics in one form or another. One of the differences between an exceptional hero and a good player lies in the detail and the degree of execution.

Work on the mental side of young people should become the norm

In mental work is the same. With teams back in training, how many players have they had in mind over the summer? How many people will still let their emotions play tricks on them during an important free throw, a last-ditch, or a game of more adversity than usual?

Episode 3 – Dangerous Free Throw Exercise

The best players have realized that it is necessary to find a balance between their technical, physical and mental abilities. A player who is very athletic but without good technique cannot help his team despite his physical attributes. On the other hand, a technical player who is not working on his physique will also be restricted due to lack of cardio, strength or speed. Finally, a player with a great mind is sure to help his team on and off the field, but he won’t be able to do much if he isn’t technically or physically capable.

school for life

So there is a basic balance to be found. Until 20-30 years ago, technology was the mainstay of basketball. Since then, fitness and athletic qualities have taken on another dimension in the world of orange ball. So the next step in basketball player development is the mental approach.

However easy to reach and easy to understand by everyone, mindfulness is always neglected, due to lack of interest, not knowing who or how to work with it regularly so that it can develop one’s skills and reach a higher level.

However, as with all of the values that sports can convey, learning mental skills allows young basketball players to be more successful in everyday life, as these technologies serve them daily to meet challenges. , work). Hence the importance of developing these qualities.

“The book you don’t read can’t help you…”

Over the summer, I also did my recess homework by publishing the first book that serves as a mental guide for (young) basketball players in French and English – Lithuanian, Spanish and Slovenian versions will follow in the coming weeks.

authorized 1 on 1 with yourself, this 58-page little book gives access to the mental techniques used by the greatest heroes as well as 20 experienced match situations, and how to mentally prepare for them to control your emotions. You are able to perform as regularly as possible.

This book was not written believing it to be the ultimate truth, it was written with the humility of a fiery ex-player and passionate coach who needed to understand how to handle certain situations in the past. It aims to help young players find solutions within themselves and openness to thinking about mental preparation in basketball.

Available on Amazon in paperback or e-book format.
