Despite Szilard Pinky, Bosnia and Herzegovina has Hungary

Having beaten the Blues a few days earlier, Bosnia and Herzegovina beat Hungary 95-85 at the EuroBasket in a match that was already crucial to keep hope of qualifying.

In front of a good handful of spectators, even if the crowds are very far from the 14,000 spectators announced by the International Basketball Federation, the EuroBasket tournament began Thursday noon in Cologne (Germany) with a match between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Hungary. A truly crucial meeting for one of the teams where the loser can practically consider himself eliminated for the rest of the team. After beating France in the 2023 World Cup qualifiers a few days ago, Bosnia and Herzegovina followed suit. “It’s a huge victory,” John Roberson, a naturalized Bosnian, rejoices. “It was important to start this tournament on the right foot. Now, we have to build something around this success.”

If the match was fairly balanced from the start, Bosnia still had little trouble playing it despite a good start by Dzanan Musa (9 points in the quarter) who responded to Hungarian David Vojvoda (10 points). Finally, in the second quarter, the Bosnians responded thanks to the simultaneous awakening of Miralem Halilovic and John Roberson while Hungary continued to open basketball to return to the locker room with a short header (45-46).

After the break, Bosnia hit the accelerator and created the first big gap in the game (+10) under a burning four-wheel drive: Norkic (19 points), Khalilovic (16 points), Roberson (18 points) and Musa (19 points). But Hungary held out and were able to count on new Gravelnoy Zilard Pinke, particularly aggressive and charismatic (20 points, 4 rebounds and 6 assists for 29 PIRs in 25 minutes of play), to stay in the game. (10 points in the first half and 15 points at the end) was less efficient in the second half.

If Hungary looked like it was getting close, Bosnia dominated their game to the last minute to win 95 to 85 and provide themselves with their first European Basketball Championship win. We deserved this victory more than them. “We played to our strengths by alternating between indoor and outdoor play,” said Yosef Nurkic, Babar Portland Trailblazers. From now on, like all his teammates, he can dream of runners-up in Berlin if an exploit occurs in the following matches…
