In this penultimate round of 16 round of the competition, at the end of Sunday afternoon, two teams of particular interest to France will compete. Indeed, the winner of this Serbia-Italy will be the opponent of Vincent Colette and his men in the final 1/4 on Wednesday.
The Joker starts his business
Unsurprisingly, it was the Serbs who played their best, with a very good first quarter. As always with the forces of Svetislav Pesic in this EuroBasket tournament, the attack unfolds, under the impetus of the brilliant duo Vasilije Micic – Nikola Jokic in “Pick-and-Roll”.
“The Joker” is in the MVP position in the first season, with 9 points, of which 7 are on the free-throw line. Collectively, Serbia went to the penalty line on 11 occasions.
The Italian players are focused and undeserving, but they have a lot of flaws at the start hoping to hinder their opponents. Especially in the outdoor shooting exercise, with the ugly 2/9, which is clearly all they have against a formation that crushes them in the racket (20 rebounds to 11 in the first half, in favor of Serbia). But everything will work out then, in the second quarter, for Squadra Azure. Thanks in large part to a rediscovered outdoor title, with a nice 6/10 in ten minutes, led by wingers Nicolo Melli and Simon Fontechio, who combined five award-winning shots.
While they were on the verge of collapsing a few minutes ago by about 15 points, the Italians were finally in the rear-view mirror of the Serbs at the break (51-45).
blow up the Italians
It is therefore no surprise that Italy, two minutes into the third quarter, managed to pass the score (66-63), after adding four more award-winning shots to its response.
The tension increases due to the specter of “discomfort”, the Serbs lose the fluidity of their attack, even if Nikola Jokic is still in the furnace and at the factory. After a few minutes, the situation even worsened dangerously for the Serbs, who conceded a terrible 16-2 net to start the final season, while Italy scored six extra outside shots. Even coach Pozzecco’s expulsion, for two techniques, does not lead to the Italian shooting.
Five minutes after the end of the match, the Italian national team increased their lead to +12 (82-70)! The Serbs will not return, and therefore take the door in the second round (84-76), against an Italian team with a demonic outside title (16/38). (Rather) Good news for the French team, which avoids the 1/4 final against Cadore from the competition…but the Blues are already accustomed to screwing up when they are favourites.
See you anyway Wednesday at 5:15 p.m.
