ITW Kim Tillie: ‘I went back to France to prove I wasn’t involved’

Two years after he left Monaco, where he was not well used in the Zvezdan Mitrovic regime, Kim Tell (2.10 AD, age 34) signed his return to France with his one-year commitment with Cholet. The former France international wants to prove he hasn’t finished with a Maugeoise formation full of great promise.

Kim, a few days before the start of the tournament, what is your assessment of the pre-season in Cholet?

There are a lot of positives to get rid of. First, we started preparing relatively early, on August 10 to be exact. This was followed by a series of friendlies with two trophies at stake. This automatically gives confidence. We are reaping the fruits of labor. The group is a talented and ambitious young woman. The area of improvement for this team is important. In addition, we did good basketball, which is really good. Even if there are a couple of less successful games, and they are definitely related to fatigue, the pre-season is positive. The signs are green.

She wasn’t insensitive to the “game à la Choletaise” of the early 2000s, that is, in sassy style. Do you find this idea in the shadow of “Laurent Villa”?

Yes, of course ! Hence my job is to set defensive intensity, bring in energy, and motivate my teammates. I’m here to give all my experience, pass on the coach’s message to the youngsters, and make sure everyone plays at 100%. In Vitoria, for example, there were many captains: on the field, in the dressing room, on the defense. I was the assistant defense commander, motivating the group. This will be my turn this year.

In Monaco, the experience didn’t go as well as I had hoped. You even left in the middle of the season. Did you arrive in Cholet in a vengeful state of mind?

Yes that’s it. I went back to France to prove that I wasn’t involved, that I still had the level I still had even if I was nearing the end of my career. Well, I consider myself in the middle (laughs).

In addition to proving that you are still up to par, what are the other reasons for your return to France?

It is also for cultural reasons. My kids, who are 6 and 4 years old respectively, didn’t grow up much in France. I wanted to settle down with my little family even though I only signed with Cholet for a year. I hope to stay longer in France.

To the point of ending your career there?

maybe. After that, don’t close the doors to a fresh start outside. But this will be conditioned on a good offer. I am a traveler at heart.

What exactly do you keep from all these experiences abroad (US, Spain, Montenegro, Japan, Greece)?

It was a wonderful human experience. Japan remains my favorite experience. In terms of basketball, I don’t know if it’s the best option in my career (laughs). But it was a wonderful stay. When my agent told me that I had received an offer from the Okinawa club, I said to myself: “Where does this come from?”. I go to Google and there I say to myself, “Oh my God, that’s cool.” The club has an infrastructure befitting the NBA. Basketball is a popular sport there. For example, I scored the winning shot in a force 3 playoff game. In 5 minutes, my video had 50,000 views on Twitter. In France, it will not have the same effect. The Japanese page has now been turned. I was looking for a more mathematically interesting project. I’m so tempted by Cholet.

A word about the blues, you guys are international. What do you think of their performance in the euro?

This is the obstacle course! I find it difficult to deal with the French national team. But people are often harsh here. We should have already lost in the round of 16 to Turkey (laughs). Returning with a silver is good, even if it is once. It’s fun to lose again to the Spaniards.
